Explosion injures South Korean officers in DMZ
SEOUL, South Korea — Three South Korean military officers were injured Monday in an unexplained explosion while conducting an operation in the western sector of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating the two Koreas, reports BritPanorama.
Two of the officers were evacuated by helicopter, while the third was expected to be transported by road before also being airlifted, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) stated, without providing further details on their condition.
South Korean media suggested the blast might have been caused by a mine.
The explosion occurred south of the Military Demarcation Line within the DMZ, according to the JCS. This heavily fortified border has separated North and South Korea since the Korean War concluded with an armistice rather than a formal peace treaty.
Incidents involving mine explosions and similar hazards are common in and around the DMZ, where legacy devices and suspected stray mines have periodically injured military personnel on both sides.
Reports indicate that North Korean forces resumed fortification work near the border in March, which included mine-laying and construction of fences.
Earlier this month, South Korean lawmaker Yu Yong-weon noted that minefields and other installations built by North Korea have crossed the Military Demarcation Line by approximately 30 to 50 feet at six locations in the western area of the DMZ.
Such developments highlight the ongoing risks present in a region that has been marked by tension for decades.
