Ukrainian drone attack in Moscow region kills two
The largest Ukrainian drone attack reported so far on the Moscow region killed two people and damaged part of an oil refinery in the capital, authorities said on Sunday, as Russia enters the final day of parliamentary elections, reports BritPanorama.
Ukraine and Russia have continued attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure despite an announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump that they had agreed to cease actions.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated via his Telegram channel that Russia had downed more than 1,600 drones since Saturday, including 450 aimed at Moscow.
He described the attack as unprecedented, asserting that it was clearly intended to disrupt the elections but added that the “adversary failed to achieve this.”
Several drones penetrated the premises of the oil refinery, with one striking an apartment building, according to Sobyanin.
In the village of Sofyino, south of Moscow, a body covered in a stained blanket lay near a damaged apartment block, where upper windows had been blown out.
“Glass went flying, people started screaming and shouting. I turned around, and the entrance doors had already been blown out, debris everywhere,” said a resident identified only as Vitaliy.
Mayor Sobyanin reported damage to a facility at the Moscow refinery but did not provide additional details, as noted by news agency Interfax.
Witnesses in Moscow reported hearing blasts and observed smoke rising from the refinery site.
Ukrainian strikes have significantly impaired Russia’s oil refining capacity, leading to oil product shortages, rising fuel prices, and long queues at petrol stations across various regions.
The Moscow plant, previously targeted multiple times, processed 11.6 million metric tons of oil in 2024, producing 2.9 million tons of gasoline and 3.2 million tons of diesel, according to the latest available data.
Ukraine has not issued any comments regarding the attacks, and both parties maintain that they do not target civilians.
In the broader Moscow region, in addition to the two fatalities, approximately 400 individuals, including 70 children, were evacuated from a 21-storey block in the Ramenskoye district, with several homes suffering damage, said Governor Andrei Vorobyov.
