Tuchel challenges Alexander-Arnold to reclaim England spot
Thomas Tuchel has challenged Trent Alexander-Arnold to fight for his England place after recalling the defender for England’s Nations League campaign, reports BritPanorama.
Alexander-Arnold, who missed this summer’s World Cup, has been granted an opportunity to secure his return to the squad. Tuchel made it clear that while the player has been selected, there are no guarantees regarding his starting position; he must demonstrate his worth during the training camp.
“He needs to perform; it’s a competition,” Tuchel stated. He recognized the player’s absence from the World Cup, affirming that the decision to trust other players during that tournament stands, indicating it is now up to Alexander-Arnold to prove himself. “He always said he’s up for the fight. It’s now up to him to show. We have a long camp and I’m sure he’ll show up.”
Tuchel has confirmed that he will utilise Alexander-Arnold as a right-back rather than in a midfield role, stating, “The same goes for Trent. He was never non-selectable.” Alongside Alexander-Arnold, Cole Palmer also earned a recall with Tuchel praising his recent contributions. “Cole has his numbers back. Assists, decisive goals. I think he has a point to prove,” he noted.
England’s Nations League campaign kicks off against Spain next Saturday, followed by a match against Czechia on September 29. This is an important window for players seeking to establish their credentials within the team.
Tuchel expressed intent to maintain the group that reached the World Cup semi-finals, yet acknowledged injuries have disrupted those plans. “These players were crucial for us building the brotherhood and mentality that took us a long way in the tournament. We will not compromise on that.” England had a strong showing at the World Cup, winning six of their eight matches, with the only defeat being a semi-final loss to Argentina.
Despite the lingering disappointment of that result, Tuchel enters this new phase confident, following a recent victory over France. “The target is to go all the way in the Nations League,” he remarked, highlighting the ambition for the upcoming challenges.
