Zack Polanski seeks to challenge Labour’s grip on Holborn and St Pancras in by-election

Political turbulence in Holborn and St Pancras

The upcoming by-election in the safe Labour seat of Holborn and St Pancras, previously held by Sir Keir Starmer, is now shaping up as a potentially disruptive contest, with Zack Polanski from the Greens emerging as a significant rival, reports BritPanorama.

This election has effectively become a two-horse race dominated by Labour and the Greens. Other parties, while present, are largely peripheral in a contest where Labour and Green supporters are looking to consolidate their votes. Labour has selected Sagal Abdi-Wali, the leader of Camden Council, while Polanski, a member of the Greater London Assembly, is campaigning vigorously.

Abdi-Wali brings a compelling narrative to the race; having arrived in the UK as a child refugee, she has made substantial contributions to local public service. Her multicultural background has faced some derogatory remarks from far-right elements, notably from within the Reform Party, potentially bolstering her appeal among a diverse constituency. Andrew Feinstein, a Corbynite rebel previously seen as a contender, has announced his support for Polanski, who needs to capture a larger share of the electorate to pose a genuine challenge.

In the last general election, Starmer garnered 48.9 percent of the vote, while Feinstein and the Greens accounted for 10.4 percent and 18.9 percent respectively. However, changes in local sentiment are suggesting an evolving political landscape. Recent local elections saw the Greens achieving 28.8 percent, with Labour leading at 38.8 percent.

Factors influencing the election outcome

National trends, particularly the implications of Andy Burnham’s leadership of Labour, may enhance Abdi-Wali’s position in Starmer’s former constituency. Additionally, a recent shift in government policy regarding Israeli settlements in the West Bank and a renewed pro-Palestinian approach could further bolster her credentials. Nevertheless, Labour is contending with perceptions of being “anti-London” following its shift towards “Manchesterism.”

The Greens, despite some initial momentum, have found themselves faltering. Polanski’s campaign has faced setbacks, including controversies over his council tax bill. Major issues for voters are likely to centre on housing and the rising cost of living, which have become increasingly pivotal in political discussions.

Current odds and implications for Polanski

Although voting will take place on Thursday, 8 October, current odds see Labour heavily favoured at 3 to 1 on, with the Greens positioned at about 5 to 2. This dynamic suggests a solid backing for Labour, but Polanski is not without prospects.

For Polanski, the by-election represents a unique chance not only to potentially win the seat but also to elevate the Green Party’s profile. Such a victory would be unexpected and could mirror previous Green successes in areas like Gorton and Denton. If he avoids further scandal, the contest could enhance his political capital regardless of the outcome.

The impending election encapsulates a critical moment in British politics, emphasizing local dynamics amid broader national trends. An electoral upset could signal shifting allegiances within the electorate.
