Arsenal to contact Pro Ref over penalty decision against Ezri Konsa
Arsenal intends to reach out to the refereeing organisation Pro Ref following the controversial penalty awarded against defender Ezri Konsa in their recent 2-0 victory over Sunderland, reports BritPanorama.
Konsa was penalised for excessive holding on Sunderland centre-half Dan Ballard inside the penalty area, prompting a strong reaction from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.
Referee John Brooks’ decision ignited discontent among Arsenal members, particularly Arteta, who expressed deep dissatisfaction with the ruling after the final whistle. The VAR team affirmed Brooks’ call, which was ultimately saved by Arsenal’s goalkeeper David Raya.
Arsenal is seeking clarification regarding the penalty decision, questioning the reasoning behind Brooks’ judgment. The Premier League Match Centre issued a statement confirming that the penalty was checked and upheld by VAR.
Arteta remarked on the contentious decision, stating, “This is not acceptable at this level,” indicating his belief in the inadequacy of officiating at such a crucial juncture of the season. “I watched it 20 times, and I cannot find a way to understand how they think to give a penalty in that situation, or the way the VAR has to intervene,” he said, alluding to the potential implications on the title race.
Despite the contentious penalty, Arsenal secured their win, continuing their perfect start to the league season. Bruno Guimaraes quickly equalised after the penalty save, while Bukayo Saka sealed the victory with a late penalty after Sunderland’s Reinildo saw red for a foul.
Arteta praised Guimaraes’ performance and credited Sunderland for their competitive play. “They have courage and a really good understanding of what they have to do throughout the game,” he noted, acknowledging the challenge his team faced amid a demanding schedule.
