Kimi Antonelli wins Spanish Grand Prix, extending championship lead
Kimi Antonelli has won the Spanish Grand Prix, further solidifying his position at the top of the Drivers’ Championship, reports BritPanorama.
Lewis Hamilton faced difficulties during the race, retiring due to a brake failure just seven laps in, adding to his struggles this season. The British driver dropped down the field before informing his team, “I’ve got no brakes,” as his race ended prematurely.
Lando Norris, who started from pole position, ultimately finished third after a virtual safety car (VSC) period during which he lost over 20 seconds. Max Verstappen secured second place, defending effectively in the final laps to maintain his position against Norris.
The race took a turn on lap 14 when Norris was adversely affected by a VSC caused by Lance Stroll’s stoppage. This incident saw both Antonelli and Verstappen pitting for new hard tyres, while George Russell changed to medium tyres. Norris’s slow pit stop relegated him to fifth by the time the race was back to full speed.
By lap 49, Antonelli took the lead as Charles Leclerc pitted, with Verstappen closely pursuing him and Norris lurking nearby, setting the stage for an intense finish. Over the closing laps, Antonelli increased his lead to three seconds and successfully fended off any challenges, while Verstappen defended brilliantly against Norris’s attempts to overtake.
Leclerc finished fourth, with Russell clinching the fastest lap but rounding out the top five. Post-race, the stewards noted an incident involving Verstappen, who was reported for leaving the track and gaining an advantage over Norris, although no conclusion has yet been reached regarding the matter.
