Former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim made an unfortunate analogy involving plane crashes while speaking to reporters on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, reports BritPanorama.
The AC Milan boss was discussing the importance of learning from mistakes during a press conference ahead of his side’s Serie A encounter with Lazio. Amorim attempted to explain why Milan must use every training session to improve, only to compare the process with investigators learning from aviation disasters.
“We have to get better during every training session,” the Portuguese coach stated. “It’s just like with plane crashes. That’s where you learn… This is not a good comparison.” His remark drew immediate attention, prompting a nervous laugh from him as he recognized the unfortunate timing of his comments.
Amorim sought to clarify his intent, saying, “But you understand what I mean. If something goes wrong, we absorb all the information and apply it in training.” The comment has generated significant discussion online, with one video of his exchange attracting nearly seven million views on social media.
The date marked a solemn occasion, as it was exactly 25 years since the attacks that led to nearly 3,000 fatalities when four passenger planes were hijacked in the United States. Two were flown into the Twin Towers in New York, another struck the Pentagon, while the fourth crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to regain control.
Beyond his analogy, Amorim also addressed his footballing philosophy as he prepared unbeaten Milan for their fourth league fixture of the campaign. He firmly rejected comparisons between his methods and those of Cesc Fabregas, whose Como side recently made it into the Champions League.
“If you want a team that plays like Como, you need to buy the manager of Como,” Amorim asserted. He emphasized his distinct style, stating, “I’m completely different, I have my style of play and identity. We are in different clubs.”
Amorim added that while he admires various managers, he does not simply replicate their tactics. “I’m not focused on how Como is playing, I’m focused on how to win games and play in the way that I feel is the right way of playing,” he remarked.
Additionally, he confirmed that Christian Pulisic is finally set to make his debut under him after not featuring so far this season. “You’re going to see Pulisic tomorrow,” he noted. “He’s going to play some minutes now. I like Pulisic.” Amorim recognized Pulisic’s frustration over his lack of playing time but affirmed his importance to the squad as they look to secure their first Serie A victory of the season.
