Corinna Schumacher offers rare insights in new Netflix documentary
Michael Schumacher’s wife, Corinna, has provided a rare glimpse into the life of the renowned Formula One driver in a poignant trailer for an upcoming Netflix documentary, Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend, reports BritPanorama.
The documentary, set to be released globally on October 2, revisits the pivotal season when Schumacher clinched his first Formula One World Championship at the age of 25, following a dramatic and controversial 1994 campaign.
This triumph marked the beginning of “Schumi Mania” in Germany and heralded an era of dominance that would ultimately see him equaling a record seven world championships. Corinna, who has protected her husband’s privacy since his serious skiing accident in December 2013, is expected to share intimate details about Schumacher’s life off the track. “Not many people know Michael the way I know him,” she states in the trailer.
The documentary will also delve into the tragic events of the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix weekend, during which three-time world champion Ayrton Senna and rookie Roland Ratzenberger lost their lives. Corinna reflects on how those incidents heightened awareness of the dangers associated with the sport, saying, “That was the first time we thought ‘This is actually dangerous’. [But] you can’t stop a real racer from driving.”
Several figures central to Schumacher’s career, including his former manager Willi Weber and ex-Benetton team principal Flavio Briatore, will appear in the film. It remains uncertain whether Corinna will disclose any current information regarding her husband’s health.
Schumacher sustained life-changing injuries after a skiing accident, leading to a medically induced coma and prolonged hospital stay. Since his return home in 2014, information regarding his condition has been closely guarded, restricted to family and medical personnel. Corinna previously remarked on their family’s approach to privacy in a 2021 documentary, asserting, “We’re trying to carry on as a family, the way Michael liked it and still does. And we are getting on with our lives.”
Many familiar figures from the F1 world, including Jean Todt and Ross Brawn, have been permitted to visit him, with Todt maintaining a close connection despite acknowledging a change in communication since the accident.
