Elliot Anderson told Ryan Giggs to “leave me alone” after the Manchester United legend relentlessly attempted to convince him to move to Old Trafford, reports BritPanorama.
Giggs encountered the England midfielder on a golf course while on holiday shortly before the World Cup, which prompted an impromptu charm offensive from the former player.
Anderson was United’s primary midfield target ahead of the summer transfer window, but Manchester City ultimately secured his signature for £116 million. In response, United restructured their midfield by signing Youri Tielemans, Carlos Baleba, and Andrey Santos.
As Anderson prepares for his first Manchester derby this weekend, Giggs has described the lengths he went to persuade the player toward his old club. “It was literally a few days before he went to the World Cup. I peppered him,” Giggs shared during an appearance on Rio Ferdinand Presents: The Debrief. “He didn’t know how to take it at first, and then he relaxed a little bit. But for the first four or five holes, we were literally crossing.”
Giggs recalled how his persistence led Anderson to exclaim, “will you just let me, leave me alone. Will you just let me play my golf, please? You’re in trouble.” Ferdinand acknowledged that he has employed similar tactics with potential United recruits but noted that Anderson’s hefty transfer fee placed him beyond the club’s financial reach.
“That’s what I do when I see some players. I don’t care,” Ferdinand said. “You’ve got to try all sorts to get these deals over. It’s mad, though. Obviously, the price tag was crazy. And it’s just like astronomical money. And Man United ain’t got the budget to pay for that.”
Also during the conversation, Giggs reflected on a prior discussion with Pep Guardiola regarding Marcus Rashford. The Welshman recounted Guardiola’s assertion that Rashford was “the best player at Man United” and expressed a desire to sign him. Further, Giggs noted an opportunity missed by United to pursue Kylian Mbappe during his tenure as assistant manager, where his potential was evident but ultimately disregarded by the club’s scouts.
