Scott McTominay undergoes heart procedure
Scott McTominay, the 29-year-old Napoli and Scotland midfielder, underwent a successful heart ablation procedure at Spire Manchester Hospital on Tuesday morning, reports BritPanorama.
The former Manchester United player had been diagnosed with a mild benign arrhythmia—an irregular heart rhythm deemed non-serious and posing no significant health risk.
Napoli confirmed the news in a statement: “On Tuesday morning, Scott McTominay underwent an ablation procedure at Spire Manchester Hospital. The operation was a complete success.”
According to the British Heart Foundation, the procedure employs heat or cold energy to create tiny scars in the heart to block faulty electrical signals, effectively restoring a normal rhythm.
Since moving from Manchester United to Naples in 2024, McTominay has become one of Serie A’s standout performers, netting 27 goals in 82 appearances. His contributions were crucial in securing Napoli’s Scudetto title during his debut season, earning him the accolade of Serie A’s most valuable player for 2024-25.
Despite his impressive record, McTominay has yet to find his form in the current season, with Napoli managing just three points from their opening three league matches. He will now observe a two-week rest period, sidelining him for key fixtures including the Champions League opener against Arsenal and Serie A matches against Bologna and Fiorentina.
Internationally, McTominay will miss the first four Nations League matches under Scotland’s new head coach, Sébastien Pocognoli, including two games against Slovenia and fixtures against Switzerland and North Macedonia. The timing of the procedure was strategically chosen to align with the September-October international window, limiting the impact on his match schedule.
Prior to the operation, McTominay expressed minimal concern, stating, “I’m fine. The procedure was something I’d planned to do with the club for quite a while.”
Following surgery, his fiancée Cam Reading shared a supportive message on social media, expressing pride and loyalty. The couple have been engaged since approximately 2022.
