Green Party leader announces bid for Holborn and St Pancras by-election
Green Party leader Zack Polanski has announced his intention to stand in the Holborn and St Pancras by-election triggered by the resignation of former prime minister Sir Keir Starmer, reports BritPanorama.
Mr. Polanski expressed his enthusiasm for the community, stating, “I have lived and worked in this community over many years, I know it well and I love it.” He added, “It represents so many of the things that make London so special. I am so excited by the prospect of representing this place in Parliament.”
Sir Keir announced his resignation earlier this week, indicating that it was the “right time” for him to step down as an MP and focus on new work in international affairs. This announcement follows his replacement by Andy Burnham as Prime Minister and Labour leader in July after a series of political mis-steps, policy changes, and disappointing local election results.
The Green Party is anticipated to be Labour’s main challenger in the upcoming by-election, especially if recent voting trends persist. Labour has maintained a stronghold on this inner London constituency since its inception in 1983, securing at least 40 per cent of the vote in every subsequent election. However, Sir Keir’s command in the 2019 election, where he garnered 64.5 per cent, sharply declined to 48.9 per cent in 2024, with his majority diminishing from 27,763 to 11,572.
During the 2024 election, independent candidate Andrew Feinstein achieved second place with 18.9 per cent of the votes, followed by the Greens at 10.4 per cent. The Conservatives received 7.2 per cent, while Reform and the Liberal Democrats captured 6.1 per cent and 5.8 per cent respectively. The strong performance of independent and Green candidates has been suggested to reflect discontent among former Labour voters regarding Sir Keir’s stance on Israel’s actions in the Gaza conflict with Hamas.
Both the independent and Green candidates emphasised this issue as a focal point of their campaigns. In his resignation statement shared on X, Sir Keir remarked, “It’s been an honour and privilege to represent the best constituency in the country since taking over from the great Frank Dobson 11 years ago.” He continued, “But it is now time to step aside and focus on other issues: international affairs including defence, security, trade and technology in a fast-changing world. I will also continue working with others as I have done over many decades to tackle violence against women and girls.”
Despite the upcoming challenge for Labour, the dynamics of the Holborn and St Pancras constituency remain complex, reflecting shifting voter sentiments that could reshape the political landscape further.
