Lando Norris commits future to McLaren with contract extension until 2030
Lando Norris has committed his long-term future to McLaren, penning a fresh deal that keeps the reigning world champion at the Woking squad through to the end of 2030, reports BritPanorama.
The 26-year-old announced the extension at McLaren’s Surrey headquarters on Saturday, reinforcing a partnership that stretches back to 2017 when he first joined their junior programme. Should Norris see out the contract in full, he will have spent 12 seasons racing for McLaren — matching Lewis Hamilton’s lengthy tenure at Mercedes.
“McLaren’s been my home since the very, very beginning of my career in Formula 1, and I want it to stay that way for as long as possible,” Norris said. “We’ve had a great few years, and I’m confident we can achieve that many more times.”
The Bristol-born driver secured his first drivers’ championship with McLaren last season, clinching the title at the Abu Dhabi finale. However, despite his evident satisfaction with the arrangement, Norris expressed some frustration regarding his salary. While Hamilton reportedly earns roughly £46 million annually at Ferrari and Verstappen’s renewed Red Bull terms are understood to be worth a record-breaking £51 million per year, reports suggest that Norris’s improved salary is approximately £30 million.
“I feel I should earn as much as them, but it is certainly not close to the figures that I’ve been seeing online, sadly!” Norris told the Telegraph. He acknowledged the pay gap reflects a difference in career accomplishments, conceding that Hamilton and Verstappen have achieved considerably more.
“Which, in a way, it shouldn’t be, because I’ve not achieved as much as what they’ve achieved in their careers,” he stated. “But in another way, I believe it should be, because I believe I can fight against them whenever I need to, and I can do a better job whenever I need to.” Norris described holding “two opinions” on the matter, accepting the disparity’s logic while feeling he merits more.
Despite other teams expressing interest in signing him, Norris insisted he never seriously considered leaving McLaren. “It was probably one of the easiest decisions I’ve made since being in Formula 1,” he said. The 13-time grand prix winner emphasized that loyalty and personal relationships carry significant weight alongside on-track performance.
Norris stressed that his commitment to McLaren remains firm, even amid a difficult start to the current campaign. Team principal Andrea Stella praised the continuity the deal provides, noting that alongside Oscar Piastri, the team boasts “one of the strongest partnerships” on the grid.
Currently sitting fourth in the 2026 drivers’ standings, Norris is 83 points adrift of championship leader Kimi Antonelli, trailing compatriots George Russell and Hamilton. However, momentum appears to be on his side as he heads into the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, having achieved consecutive victories in Hungary and the Netherlands.
Prior to that double triumph, Norris’s season had yielded just two podium finishes, despite scoring points in every race he completed. “I can’t wait to get back in the car in Monza and I’m very excited about what the future holds for us, both over the rest of this season and in the coming years,” he said. A multi-year option to extend beyond 2030 is also included in the deal.
As the paddock buzzes with renewed anticipation, Norris’s journey reflects both the personal stakes and competitive dynamics that define the relentless pursuit of excellence in Formula 1.
