Bruno Fernandes delivered a stunning treble to inspire Manchester United to a comprehensive 5-1 victory over Ipswich Town, overturning an early deficit at Old Trafford, reports BritPanorama.
Ipswich, fresh from defeating Sunderland on their top-flight return the previous week, took a surprise lead through Leif Davis. The full-back struck an impressive half-volley following superb wing play from Abdul Fatawu.
However, the match swung dramatically in United’s favour as Fernandes took control. The Portuguese captain netted three times and also teed up Bryan Mbeumo for the hosts’ fifth, transforming what had threatened to become an embarrassing afternoon into a resounding triumph for Michael Carrick’s side.
The turning point arrived when Ipswich midfielder Marcelino Nunez lost his footing, enabling United to launch a swift counter-attack from a corner. Matheus Cunha played in Fernandes, who made no mistake with the finish.
United then went ahead courtesy of a Jacob Greaves own goal, the Ipswich centre-back deflecting Harry Maguire’s strike into his own net. Maguire had handled the ball in the build-up, but the goal stood as he was not the scorer.
Greaves’ misery deepened just three minutes later when he fouled Cunha inside the box. Fernandes converted the resulting spot-kick with characteristic composure.
The captain completed his hat-trick after efforts from Kobbie Mainoo and Mbeumo were both blocked, pouncing on the loose ball. Fernandes then capped his masterful display by threading a lofted pass to Mbeumo, whose effort struck the crossbar before bouncing over the line to seal a 5-1 scoreline.
The United skipper was not finished there either, attempting an audacious strike from the halfway line moments after completing his treble, though the ball sailed onto the roof of the net.
Ipswich did manage a late reply when Julio Enciso squared for Chuba Akpom, who had come on at half-time, to find the net. The emphatic nature of the result ensured attention remained firmly on Fernandes’ brilliance rather than the contentious second goal.
Fernandes’ performance came days after he was named the PFA men’s player of the year, recognised for a campaign in which he set a new Premier League record with 21 assists.
The treble was his third in a United shirt, lifting his overall tally to 113 goals across 330 appearances under Carrick. His intervention proved particularly timely given United’s 2-0 defeat at Hull the previous weekend. A second successive loss to newly promoted opposition would have made them only the fourth top-flight club in history to suffer that fate in their opening two fixtures.
Goalkeeper Senne Lammens had also been required to make several saves before the tide turned.
