Xabi Alonso provides update on Moises Caicedo's injury setback after brief return against Brighton

Moises Caicedo exits early due to injury during Chelsea’s match

Moises Caicedo’s afternoon at Stamford Bridge lasted barely a quarter of an hour before ending in distress, reports BritPanorama.

The Ecuadorian midfielder entered the fray in the 68th minute of Chelsea’s pulsating 4-3 triumph over Brighton, only to be withdrawn by the 82nd minute after breaking down with an injury. Physios attended to his left leg as he sat on the turf before he departed under his own steam.

The 24-year-old pulled his shirt over his face while walking towards the tunnel, flanked by two members of the club’s medical team. Valentin Barco, a former Brighton player himself, was summoned to take his place.

Caicedo had already been sidelined for Chelsea’s opening two fixtures of the campaign, missing the Premier League win against Fulham and the Carabao Cup victory over Luton Town. A return to training at Cobham on Friday had offered encouragement, though the club monitored him carefully before settling on a bench role against his former side.

The decision to limit him to substitute duty reflected lingering concerns over his fitness. Sunday’s outing represented his first competitive minutes of the 2026-27 season, but the physical intensity of the Brighton clash proved too demanding for a player still managing a pre-existing problem.

Speaking after the match, Xabi Alonso sought to play down fears of a fresh setback. “We hope it is not new and not more than last time,” the Chelsea manager told reporters. “He was cautious to stop; his feeling was not the best, but we have to assess.” Alonso’s remarks suggest the issue stems from the same knock that had kept Caicedo out earlier in the campaign rather than a separate complaint. The midfielder appeared to feel a recurrence and opted to pull himself out of the action as a precaution. Further medical evaluation in the coming days will determine the full extent of the problem.

Chelsea’s midfield situation is further complicated by the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Enzo Fernandez, who missed a second consecutive match amid strong links to Manchester City with the transfer deadline approaching. Should Caicedo fail to recover in time for next Sunday’s trip to the Emirates to face Arsenal, Alonso will likely turn to Reece James alongside Romeo Lavia in the engine room. James has already been deployed in a deeper midfield position this season, filling in during the Luton cup tie. Malo Gusto also operated at the base of midfield against Brighton, underscoring the manager’s dwindling options in that area of the pitch.

Injuries often reveal a team’s fragility, and Chelsea’s depth will soon face the sternest of tests. As they gear up for a crucial fixture against Arsenal, the situation surrounding their midfield may prove pivotal — an intriguing narrative as the transfer window draws to a close and uncertainty sows tension among the ranks.
