Rabies outbreak linked to baby goats at North Carolina mobile petting zoo prompts health warning

Multiple baby goats at a mobile petting zoo in North Carolina have tested positive for rabies, prompting health authorities to contact individuals who may have had exposure to these animals. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is urging anyone who attended events featuring the goats between July 28 and August 27 to reach out regarding potential risk, reports BritPanorama.

Residents of western North Carolina may have been exposed during visits to Farm Adventures in Harmony or off-site events. The state has not recorded any human rabies cases since 2011. Area officials stated that exposure could have occurred at ten different locations, including an assisted living facility and a back-to-school event. Those potentially at risk are advised to contact their local health departments to assess whether they require medication for rabies prevention.

The goats were likely infected by a skunk that entered their enclosure in late July. The health department was first informed of this rabies exposure on a Thursday. Subsequent lab tests confirmed the virus in three goats, while a fourth is assumed to have been infected.

Farm Adventures operates out of Iredell County and engages with communities for various events. Officials noted that the owner has been cooperating with investigators. They clarified that there is not a widespread risk to public health, specifying that only those who have had close contact with the goats are in danger.

Mecklenburg County Health Director Kimberly Scott emphasized the urgency of seeking treatment before symptoms arise, stating, “Residents should not wait for symptoms before calling.” The investigation remains dynamic, as health teams across multiple counties are collaborating with Farm Adventures and event organizers to trace the extent of the exposure.

Healthcare systems reportedly have sufficient supplies of postexposure prophylaxis (PEP), the standard treatment for rabies, and are prepared to procure additional resources as necessary. Scott indicated that early intervention is critical to prevent fatalities associated with rabies.

Farm Adventures announced the euthanization of its four infected baby goats and is diligently monitoring its remaining animals following guidelines from health officials. Owner Misty Love expressed her commitment to community safety, noting that an unexpected presence of a wild skunk in the goat pen had occurred, which led to the death of one goat and subsequent illnesses in others.

The health department and local officials are cooperating to notify attendees of various public events where the goats were present, including the Masonic Picnic and several private gatherings across multiple counties. No additional animals at the farm pose a rabies risk to the public, authorities confirmed.

What to know about the rabies virus

While human cases of rabies in the United States are uncommon, the disease is fatal without immediate medical intervention. It primarily spreads through the saliva of infected animals, most commonly through bites, though there are other means of transmission. Rabies affects the central nervous system and has a long incubation period, often resulting in death once symptoms manifest.

The rabies virus is especially concerning in contexts where humans may interact closely with livestock or wildlife, underscoring the need for vigilance in monitoring animal health and community safety practices. Authorities are actively working to ensure that anyone who may have had direct contact with the infected goats receives appropriate evaluation and treatment.

As investigations into the outbreak continue, health officials underscore the importance of preventive measures and community awareness surrounding rabies exposure risks.
