Rory McIlroy admits he’s struggling after FedEx Cup outing

Rory McIlroy has raised concerns regarding his form after admitting he is “so far away from where I need to be” following a disappointing performance at the FedEx Cup St Jude Championship, reports BritPanorama.

This marked the world number two’s return to competition after last month’s Open Championship, where he finished in a lowly position, third-to-last, struggling to find his rhythm throughout the tournament.

Reflecting on his experience, McIlroy expressed the need for substantial improvement ahead of the BMW Championship, the next event in the FedEx Cup series, stating, “I’ve just got to keep working and hope it turns around a little bit.”

He acknowledged shortcomings in his game, saying, “The swing wasn’t in sync, and obviously I didn’t do a ton of practice coming in here,” and emphasized the urgency to refine his skills before the upcoming tournament.

Despite this setback, McIlroy is secure for the season-ending Tour Championship, a goal that remains intact as he eyes an unprecedented fourth FedExCup. He remains determined to increase his competitive edge, remarking, “I’m going to have to sort of put the head down and grind from now until Thursday to try to feel like I have any sort of chance next week.”

Scottie Scheffler, meanwhile, emerged as the standout performer of the St Jude Championship, securing victory with a record eight-shot lead over Sam Burns, finishing the tournament with an impressive 17-under-par. His triumph marked a significant turnaround following a season-long winless stretch, and he commented on his achievement, saying, “I’ve had some close calls this year.”

Ultimately, the tournament served as a broader reminder of the unpredictability and dedication found within professional golf, as even top-ranked players grapple with the demands of the sport and the relentless pursuit of excellence.
