An emergency alert has been sent to phones across England and Wales as ministers scramble to tackle the growing threat of dangerous wildfires, reports BritPanorama.
The alert, dispatched progressively from around 7pm to millions of phones, warns against lighting any sources of ignition that could spark a fire, including barbecues, campfires, and fireworks. Recipients are also urged to report any fire immediately by calling 999.
This notification, which was stated by Andy Burnham to have been sent at the request of the Fire and Rescue Services, comes as firefighters continue to combat multiple blazes across different regions of the country.
The Prime Minister has responded by calling in the military, announcing a ban on disposable barbecues, and cautioning smokers against actions that could ignite “tinderbox” conditions in parts of Britain, exacerbated by the ongoing summer heatwave. Furthermore, the government plans to commission firefighting aircraft similar to those used in Europe and the US to counteract the spread of fires.
The alert was triggered by several significant fires, including one in Stourbridge, West Midlands, which resulted in the complete destruction of 19 homes.
In light of the alert, fire services have cautioned the public not to contact 999 to report non-emergency situations, such as neighbours having barbecues, unless there is an immediate risk. UK’s mobile phone alert system, employed Friday evening, urged the public to refrain from igniting anything that could lead to wildfires.
“Please only call 999 if there is an emergency or a fire producing significant smoke,” stated Surrey Fire & Rescue Service, which experienced a surge in calls following the government alert.
Additionally, Angela Rayner, the communities secretary, has indicated that her department will convene a summit with fire chiefs and the firefighters’ union to discuss future responses to wildfires. “To the residents affected, particularly those who lost their homes and possessions to fire – we will work with the mayor and local leaders to ensure you are supported,” she emphasized.
