Yvette Cooper critiques Keir Starmer’s governing style
Yvette Cooper has expressed concerns about Sir Keir Starmer’s approach to governance, highlighting potential shortcomings in his political style, reports BritPanorama.
Speaking on the Political Currency podcast, the current Health Secretary noted that Sir Keir’s tenure had some positives, yet suggested his leadership might not be effective for today’s political landscape, particularly in the age of social media. Cooper, who previously held key positions in Starmer’s Cabinet, remarked that he may not connect well with the public in a rapidly evolving political environment.
Sir Keir stepped down as Prime Minister last month, pledging his complete support to incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham. Cooper referred to her six years in government under Starmer, acknowledging both achievements and a need for improvement in governance.
Cooper reflected on the challenges faced during Starmer’s leadership, stating, “I don’t think we’ve done Government very well in the last couple of years.” She pointed to significant policy advancements, including an increase of 3,000 neighbourhood police officers and reductions in NHS waiting times, but also lamented the lack of sustained focus on key missions.
According to Cooper, Starmer’s leadership style, which emphasized problem-solving, may not resonate well in political contexts. She contrasted this with Burnham’s more engaging approach to public policy, particularly regarding social care reforms, which he has personally championed. Cooper highlighted that Burnham’s dedication enables him to connect more authentically with the electorate’s concerns.
Burnham aims to develop a cohesive care system that integrates hospitals, home care, and community services, ensuring it is well-funded and sustainable. This reflects a broader political shift, where personal enthusiasm and public engagement are increasingly influential.
