Polls indicate that one in five people in Clacton would prefer to vote for Count Binface over Nigel Farage in the upcoming by-election, which he initiated amid controversy surrounding parliamentary scrutiny of his financial affairs, reports BritPanorama.
A survey conducted by Survation for Mandate Research shows Farage, the leader of Reform UK, would secure 73 percent of the vote, while his main rival, Count Binface, might attract approximately 20 percent. In a separate Ipsos poll, a broader inquiry revealed that 33 percent of British adults would favor Count Binface over Farage, who garnered only 21 percent support.
Additionally, the survey indicated that 32 percent of respondents would not endorse either candidate, with 13 percent uncertain about their choice.
The by-election, set for 13 August, comes in response to critical questions surrounding a £5 million donation from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne and various gifts linked to convicted criminal George Cottrell.
All prominent Westminster parties, including Labour, the Conservatives, and the Liberal Democrats, are abstaining from this electoral contest, leaving the field open to independent candidates alongside Count Binface and actor-turned-politician Laurence Fox, the latter potentially securing 2 percent according to the polls.
Critics have dismissed the election as a “stunt,” with Labour’s Yvette Cooper characterizing Farage’s actions as a “political tantrum,” suggesting it serves to deflect attention from allegations related to his financial dealings.
Tendring District Council announced a record 34 candidates will contest the by-election, highlighting the election’s unusual nature. Count Binface, who is known for his satirical antics and has previously run against major political figures, positions himself as a serious contender, endorsing policies like capping the price of croissants and advocating for affordable housing.
Labour, having previously secured the 2024 general election under Sir Keir Starmer, now faces intensified competition from Reform UK, with recent polling revealing the two parties in a tight race. YouGov data indicates support levels of 22 percent for Labour, 19 percent for the Conservatives, 23 percent for Reform UK, and 13 percent for the Green Party.
