Former Chelsea academy player Xavier Simons was sent off for Bolton after punching Sheffield Wednesday’s Harry Gray during his side’s League Cup clash. The incident occurred early in the second half when the match remained goalless, reports BritPanorama.
Simons, 23, lost his composure in a moment of frustration, leading to a straight red card from referee Elliot Bell after he swung his arm at Gray, catching him in the stomach. This dismissal left Bolton a man short for much of the contest, resulting in Jamal Lowe scoring the decisive goal for Sheffield Wednesday in the 70th minute.
This defeat marks a disappointing start to the new campaign for the recently promoted Trotters, who exited the League Cup at the first hurdle after a difficult 1-0 loss.
Simons’ actions sparked an altercation on the pitch, demonstrating the high tensions in the fixture.
