Michael Owen optimistic about Marcus Rashford’s future at Manchester United
Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen believes Marcus Rashford has the potential to be a key player at Old Trafford once again, with the winger poised to be reintegrated into the squad, reports BritPanorama.
A product of the club’s academy, many expected the England international to become a legend when he burst onto the scene under Louis van Gaal a decade ago. However, Rashford struggled for consistency following a difficult spell under Erik ten Hag, leading to a loan move to Aston Villa in January last year.
During his time at Villa, Rashford flourished, particularly in the Champions League, helping Unai Emery’s side reach the quarter-finals. He also had a successful loan period at Barcelona last season, contributing to the Catalan club’s LaLiga triumph.
Despite initially aiming for a permanent transfer to Barcelona, the club opted for other signings this summer, notably Karim Adeyemi and Anthony Gordon. With interest in Rashford diminishing, indications suggest he may receive a second chance under new manager Michael Carrick, a former teammate.
Owen expressed confidence in Carrick’s ability to restore Rashford to form, stating, “Michael Carrick looks the perfect person to put an arm around his shoulder to make him feel part of the squad.” He believes that Rashford, being a World Cup England player, can be an asset to Manchester United.
Owen also mentioned the broader context of United’s transfer activities, noting the club spent £50 million to sign Andrey Santos from Chelsea and secured Youri Tielemans from Villa. However, he believes additional signings are necessary for the club to compete for the Premier League title.
“I would be looking to bring another forward player in,” he suggested, highlighting the need for depth with United’s return to Champions League football. “It’s key to have more options up front, as with so many games, you do need more options in the key forward positions.”
United are set to face PSG in a friendly on Saturday, followed by fixtures against Leeds and AC Milan, before commencing their Premier League campaign against newly-promoted Hull on August 22.
