Mikel Arteta reflects on Arsenal’s pre-season defeat to Real Betis
Mikel Arteta has admitted his Arsenal players were left ‘fuming’ after Wednesday night’s 3-1 pre-season defeat to Real Betis, though he insisted frustration inside the dressing room could prove beneficial ahead of the new Premier League campaign, reports BritPanorama.
The Gunners endured a disappointing evening in Dublin, where a series of costly defensive mistakes allowed the Spanish side to seize control before the interval. Rodrigo Riquelme, Nelson Deossa, and Pablo Fornals all found the net during a nightmare first half for Arsenal, while Piero Hincapie’s strike was merely a consolation.
Despite the result representing an unwelcome setback during preparations for the new season, Arteta was not overly concerned with the scoreline alone. He expressed encouragement by the furious reaction from his squad after the match. “Very upset, given a hard time. They are fuming, but this is good. That’s what we need,” Arteta stated following the final whistle.
He acknowledged some positives from the game despite the harsh outcome. “There are things to improve obviously, some positives to take from the game and then a bad result sometimes it’s good to create even more fire in the belly,” he added.
Arsenal faced the match without several influential figures, such as Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, and Noni Madueke. Captain Martin Odegaard has only recently resumed individual training due to recent fitness issues. Nevertheless, a squad packed with quality, including new signings Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz, and Christos Tzolis, took to the field.
However, the most pressing concern for Arsenal extended beyond the final scoreline as promising youngster Louie Copley suffered what appeared to be a serious knee injury shortly after being introduced from the bench. Arteta admitted to being “quite worried” about the confidence of the teenager, now awaiting the results of further medical examinations. “The mechanism doesn’t look very positive,” Arteta remarked. “So we are going to have to wait and see for tomorrow’s scan. Touch wood that it is not a bad one.”
As the team prepares for its Premier League title defence, Arsenal will have little time to dwell on this loss. The Gunners open their league campaign against Coventry City on August 21, looking to win the title for the second year in a row.
