Gianni Infantino calls emergency summit amid FIFA crisis
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has convened an emergency meeting with the governing body’s senior officials, as the organisation grapples with escalating internal conflict following the demise of his contentious investment proposal, reports BritPanorama.
Infantino has spent the past week in Morocco and has scheduled discussions in Rabat for Wednesday to address rifts within FIFA. His initiative aimed at privatizing the commercial operations of the organisation has collapsed, prompting a significant backlash.
The failed proposal, termed FIFA Forward Enterprise, faced sharp criticism from various factions within the organisation and was ultimately withdrawn. However, the repercussions of this internal strife continue to unfold.
Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom, along with key management figures such as finance chief Thomas Peyer and legal director Emilio Garcia Silvero, will attend the talks. Infantino’s position appears increasingly precarious as several influential figures, including Arsene Wenger, publicly dissociate themselves from the proposal, adding pressure on the FIFA president.
Wenger, who has served as FIFA’s chief of global football development since 2019, stated that the proposal should never have advanced, emphasising the need for transparency and integrity within the organisation. His previous support for Infantino’s initiative to host the men’s World Cup every two years renders his critique particularly significant.
Furthermore, prominent voices, including Prince Ali bin Al Hussein of the Jordan Football Association, have accused FIFA of creating a “blackmail” situation concerning outstanding prize money and the backing of Infantino’s re-election bid.
In an internal memo to staff, Grafstrom described the recent developments as “a sad and reproachable series of events,” expressing concern over the turmoil faced by employees while urging a focus on FIFA’s broader mission.
The crisis has already led to significant changes, including the resignation of Infantino’s adviser on global strategy, Carlos Cordeiro, who condemned the proposal as detrimental to the future of football. As the emergency meeting approaches, attention will centre on whether Infantino can mend frayed relationships and navigate the most substantial internal crisis of his tenure.
