Andy Burnham revises early prisoner release scheme amid criticism

Andy Burnham has bowed to pressure over his early prisoner release scheme, barring rapists and serious child sex offenders – including those convicted of grooming offences – from qualifying, reports BritPanorama.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the “anxiety and distress” caused by the scheme and expressed a desire to extend its reach. However, he cautioned that making broader changes could jeopardize the entire prison system.

In response, he has pledged tougher measures, including a presumption that all offenders will be tagged, extended periods of supervision, and the establishment of new restriction zones.

Despite these adjustments, reactions remain mixed. Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Timothy labelled the modifications a “victory for victims” but argued they “don’t go far enough.” Domestic abuse commissioner Dame Nicole Jacobs took a more critical stance, asserting that allowing domestic abusers to remain eligible is “wrong and puts victims’ lives at risk.”

The debate continues as discussions unfold about whether the scheme should proceed as planned or if further exclusions are warranted.

The discourse surrounding this reform reflects a balancing act between public safety and the operational strains within the prison system, revealing the complexities faced by policymakers in the current climate.
