Toto Wolff issues ultimatum to Mercedes drivers
Toto Wolff has issued an uncompromising ultimatum to his Mercedes drivers, making clear he will not hesitate to dismiss anyone who poisons the team’s working environment, reports BritPanorama.
The Austrian team principal’s blunt message to George Russell and Kimi Antonelli comes as the pair head into the summer break separated by 59 points in the championship standings — a gap that could easily breed resentment.
Speaking to reporters, Wolff left no room for ambiguity. “I will not allow it,” he declared, leaving those in the room stunned and looking around. “That is never going to happen to me again, that is never going to happen to the team again. Simple. I am just taking a driver out if he does that.”
The warning is rooted in painful experience — the toxic rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg that scarred the team a decade ago. During the fiercely contested 2016 championship, Hamilton and Rosberg clashed on track on multiple occasions, with their most infamous confrontation coming at the Spanish Grand Prix, where the duo collided and eliminated one another from the race.
Rosberg ultimately edged Hamilton to claim the title that year, but the intensity of their personal battle left deep wounds within the Silver Arrows operation. The corrosive atmosphere generated by their feud clearly left a lasting impression on Wolff. He recently disclosed that he temporarily sacked both drivers in the aftermath of the Barcelona crash, compelling them to reflect on the harm their conduct had inflicted upon the wider team.
Thus far, Russell and Antonelli have maintained a cordial relationship, though the teenager’s remarkable ascendancy has shifted the dynamic considerably. Antonelli has been nothing short of sensational in his maiden full campaign, amassing six victories in the opening half of the season. A stunning sequence of five consecutive triumphs propelled the Italian teenager into a commanding championship position, 59 points clear of his more seasoned teammate.
Russell, by contrast, has endured a deeply frustrating run. His season began promisingly with a win at the opening round in Melbourne, yet he has managed just one further victory since. A series of mechanical failures and unfortunate incidents have severely undermined the Briton’s challenge. Wolff pointed to the Canadian Grand Prix as a case in point, noting that Russell held the lead before a retirement robbed him of what would likely have been another triumph.
Wolff nonetheless expressed firm confidence that Russell possesses the mental fortitude to mount a recovery. “If there is someone on the back foot that can manage that it is George, because he is a hard guy. The best ones, they are able to turn things around. So I think he can, absolutely,” the team principal said. He also acknowledged that an engine problem on Russell’s car, which took considerable time to identify, had cost the Briton around two tenths of a second in performance.
Russell himself conceded that the mid-season interval has come at an opportune moment. Following a dispiriting seventh-place finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix, he admitted: “I usually don’t feel like I need a break [but] this year I definitely feel like I need one.”
The growing tension within the Mercedes camp underscores the pressure cooker atmosphere of Formula 1, where every point matters and the stakes have never been higher. As the team heads into the summer recess, the path forward remains uncertain, but Wolff’s stern warning is a clear signal that he expects unity and focus from his drivers.
