Joe Root returns as England Test captain with Stephen Fleming as head coach
Joe Root is back in charge of England’s Test team after the ECB made the dramatic decision to hand the veteran batter the captaincy once again, while Stephen Fleming has been appointed as the side’s new head coach, reports BritPanorama.
The 35-year-old Root, who is England’s highest-ever Test run-scorer, returns to the role more than four years after stepping down. His absence came during a period of struggle for the team, as he led England to just one victory in his final 17 matches. The ECB’s decision reflects an inclination towards experience following uncertainties surrounding Harry Brook’s ability to lead the team due to disciplinary issues on the recent winter tour of New Zealand.
Despite a disappointing season, including a recent defeat while filling in for Ben Stokes during a Test against New Zealand, Root’s proven track record has led the England hierarchy to reappoint one of the country’s greatest cricketers. He is set to begin his second spell as permanent captain in next month’s three-Test series against Pakistan.
Fleming, formerly the highly successful coach of Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, takes over from Brendon McCullum. The 53-year-old is regarded as one of cricket’s most decorated coaches, having guided the IPL team to five titles. His start with England will be delayed until September, as he wishes to spend additional time with family in New Zealand before moving to England.
The appointments of Root and Fleming suggest a focus on long-term stability for the England Test team, with both expected to collaborate in building a platform for success, particularly looking ahead to the 2027 Ashes campaign against Australia.

The ECB emphasised that Fleming was chosen following a rigorous recruitment process after McCullum was dismissed due to England’s disappointing performance in New Zealand, which followed a heavy 4-1 Ashes defeat to Australia. Managing director of England men’s cricket Rob Key believes the new leadership team has the potential to restore England to prominence in the Test arena.
“Stephen Fleming is one of the most highly respected figures in cricket,” Key said, underscoring the confidence in Fleming’s ability to harness the potential of the team. “I believe he is the best person to guide a team stacked full of potential and turn that talent into a world-class outfit that can achieve success and sustain it.”
