Michael Owen to feature in new Amazon Prime documentary
Michael Owen is set to star in a new fly-on-the-wall documentary with Amazon Prime, titled “Meet the Owens”, which lands on the streaming platform on August 28, reports BritPanorama.
Cameras will follow the former Liverpool and England striker as he manages his sprawling 170-acre racehorse operation in Cheshire. The series highlights not only Owen’s professional pursuits but also features his wife Louise and their four children — James, Emily, Jessica, and Gemma, the latter of whom gained popularity through her appearance on Love Island.
A 90-second trailer released by Prime Video opens with Owen acknowledging his reputation as a “boring p***k.” His youngest daughter, Jessica, counters this label, acknowledging that while he can be “quite embarrassing sometimes,” he is not as dull as he seems. Louise reflects on their first encounter at primary school, calling him “just a little s***.” In the trailer, Owen humorously reminisces, “I was always exceptionally talented at football. But my family? Not a***d.”
The trailer concludes with Owen successfully flipping a pancake onto a plate, illustrating a lighter side of his personality. He claims that his passion has shifted from football to horse racing, stating, “Football was my life, but now it’s horse racing. All of us are really passionate about horses.” The trailer also features Gemma as she trains for a potential ride at Goodwood.
The show’s format draws comparisons to “At Home with the Furys,” showcasing the complexities of a celebrity family’s life while blending everyday moments with their public personas. Owen, who established Manor House Stables during his playing career, is partnered with Betfair co-founder Andrew Black. The yard is equipped with advanced facilities, including over 100 boxes, a significant uphill gallop, and a specialized swimming pool for horses. Notably, Owen has experienced success as a yard owner, with his horse Brown Panther winning at Royal Ascot in 2011 and subsequently landing the Irish St Leger in 2014.
