Chelsea signs Morgan Rogers in record £117 million deal
Chelsea have secured a club-record agreement to sign England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, in a transaction valued at £117 million, reports BritPanorama.
The 23-year-old attacking midfielder, who has been a focal point for Aston Villa, will complete his medical on Monday following his international duties with England at the World Cup. This transfer exceeds the previous record for an English player, set by Manchester City’s acquisition of Elliot Anderson for £116 million.
Rogers not only becomes Chelsea’s most expensive signing by £10 million, surpassing the £107 million spent on Enzo Fernandez in 2023, but he is also expected to sign a six-year contract extending till 2032, with an option for a further year, according to reports from The Athletic.
New Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso played a crucial role in facilitating Rogers’ move, underscoring the club’s project and ambitions. Arsenal had expressed interest in the midfielder as they seek to bolster their Premier League-winning squad.
Rogers joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024, with a contract lasting until 2030.
