Chelsea signs Morgan Rogers in record £117 million deal
Chelsea have secured a club-record agreement to sign England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, in a transaction valued at £117 million, reports BritPanorama.
The 23-year-old attacking midfielder, who has been a focal point for Aston Villa, will complete his medical on Monday following his international duties with England at the World Cup. This transfer exceeds the previous record for an English player, set by Manchester City’s acquisition of Elliot Anderson for £116 million.
Rogers not only becomes Chelsea’s most expensive signing by £10 million, surpassing the £107 million spent on Enzo Fernandez in 2023, but he is also expected to sign a six-year contract extending till 2032, with an option for a further year, according to reports from The Athletic.
New Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso played a crucial role in facilitating Rogers’ move, underscoring the club’s project and ambitions. Arsenal had expressed interest in the midfielder as they seek to bolster their Premier League-winning squad.
Rogers joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024, with a contract lasting until 2030. He has had a standout season, contributing 14 goals and 12 assists in all competitions, aiding Villa’s Champions League qualification and their recent claim to the Europa League title, marking their first European trophy since 1982.
His arrival will add depth to an already robust Chelsea midfield, which includes several notable attackers. The Blues have already made significant moves in the transfer window, highlighted by the departure of left-back and World Cup finalist Marc Cucurella, and Brazilian Andrey Santos leaving for Manchester United.
The challenge for Alonso will be integrating Rogers into a squad overflowing with talent, especially as he joins his friend Cole Palmer, who shares a similar playing style. Furthermore, Chelsea is reportedly considering the sale of Alejandro Garnacho, potentially reshaping their attacking lineup.
Rogers’ addition not only raises questions about his place in a crowded midfield but also emphasizes how the transfer market continues to push boundaries and reshape team dynamics in the Premier League.
In the high-stakes world of football, each signing comes with its own narrative, and the impact of such a significant investment will be closely monitored as the season unfolds.
