Patrick Vieira departs ITV’s World Cup coverage ahead of final weekend
Patrick Vieira has left ITV’s World Cup coverage before the final weekend of the tournament, with presenter Mark Pougatch confirming the Arsenal legend would not be returning for the closing matches, reports BritPanorama.
Vieira had become a regular presence on the broadcaster’s panel throughout the competition, offering analysis alongside the likes of Roy Keane, Ian Wright, and Gary Neville. However, following Spain’s 2-0 semi-final victory over France in Dallas, Pougatch revealed that Vieira’s tournament participation had ended.
Addressing the former France captain live on air, the ITV host thanked him for his contributions and expressed disappointment that he would not be involved in the final weekend. “Patrick, it’s been great to have you with us at this World Cup. Sorry you’re not here this weekend,” Pougatch said. His absence means he will not feature when ITV broadcasts Sunday’s World Cup final.
No official explanation has been provided for his early departure. Vieira, currently without a managerial role after previous stints at Crystal Palace, Nice, and Strasbourg, is not believed to be leaving due to pre-season commitments with a club. His final appearance came on a painful night for France, who saw their hopes of reaching a third consecutive World Cup final dashed by a solid Spanish side.
Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Pedro Porro added a second, leaving Kylian Mbappé and his teammates unable to mount a comeback. Vieira, who won the World Cup with France in 1998, witnessed his country struggle to impose themselves in midfield and create meaningful opportunities in attack.
