Emma Raducanu suffers setback after Wimbledon withdrawal

Emma Raducanu has experienced another significant setback, slipping down the WTA rankings following her injury-enforced withdrawal from Wimbledon, reports BritPanorama.

The British No 1 announced she would be pulling out on the eve of the Championships due to a lower leg issue, which was subsequently diagnosed as a stress fracture. This development prevented her from building on her performance from the previous year, where she reached the third round.

As a result of not defending the ranking points earned at SW19 last year, Raducanu has dropped five places to No 38 in the latest rankings. This slide positions her outside the seeded entries for the upcoming US Open, complicating her potential draw if she returns in time for the final Grand Slam of the year.

Raducanu’s return date remains uncertain as she continues her recovery. Moreover, she has opted not to enter the Washington Open, which could lead to further loss of points, following her semi-final appearance there last year. Her case is not isolated; several high-profile players have seen declines in their rankings following Wimbledon.

Other notable drops include men’s champion Carlos Alcaraz, who fell to No 3 after missing the tournament due to a wrist injury, while women’s champion Iga Swiatek also suffered a rankings decrease after failing to defend her title. The fallout has affected numerous players, bringing into focus the impact of injuries and performance inconsistencies in the professional circuit.

This year’s Wimbledon has not only altered the landscape for Raducanu and her peers but also serves as a reminder of the physical demands of the sport and how swiftly fortunes can change.
