Mind games ahead of quarter-final clash

England defender Nico O’Reilly has accused Erling Haaland of trying to play “mind games” ahead of Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final between the Three Lions and Norway, reports BritPanorama.

England enters the last-eight clash in Miami as one of the tournament favourites after dramatic victories over DR Congo and Mexico. In contrast, Norway has exceeded expectations by reaching the quarter-finals for the first time in their history.

Despite being classified as underdogs, Norway managed to stun Brazil in the last 16, with Haaland scoring twice to propel the Scandinavian side through.

Responding to Haaland’s remarks about England’s status as “clear favourites,” O’Reilly suggested the striker was attempting to gain a psychological edge before kick-off. “Yeah, mind games,” he noted. “But they’re a good team as well. They’ve showed that throughout the whole tournament. It’s not just certain players that we need to worry about. They’re good collectively, and it’s going to be a good game.”

Stopping Haaland will be one of England’s most significant challenges. The Manchester City striker has had an outstanding first World Cup campaign, heading into the quarter-final just one goal behind Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.

O’Reilly is well aware of Haaland’s game, having shared a dressing room with the Norwegian at City alongside England teammates John Stones and Marc Guehi. While acknowledging Haaland’s prowess, the 20-year-old emphasized that England’s defenders must focus on preventing Norway from creating chances rather than merely marking the prolific striker.

O’Reilly remarked, “Erling’s Erling. We all know what he’s like. He can score goals. He’s dangerous in the box, and he’s a real threat. But they need to get him the ball in first. A lot goes into it.” He added, “I think keeping Erling quiet gives us a real chance to win the game. We know the threat he can cause – unbelievable striker, world-class, and he showed that throughout the tournament, scoring every game he’s played in.”

Additionally, O’Reilly emphasized the importance of England’s experience, remarking that many players have faced similar situations before. “A lot of experienced and older players. Of course, they help us out. They give us advice, tell us to stay calm, and just help us wherever they can,” he stated.

As the tension builds ahead of Saturday’s match, the outcome could hinge not only on individual brilliance but also on the tactical acumen of both sides. England will need to balance respect for their opponents with the confidence that their star-studded squad brings to the pitch. In the high-stakes environment of a World Cup quarter-final, every comment and every strategy counts.
