Netflix revives ‘Little House on the Prairie’ with a modern twist

Netflix is set to bring back the beloved series Little House on the Prairie with a fresh interpretation that includes significant updates to character portrayals and themes, reports BritPanorama.

The revamped series reimagines central character Laura, moving away from her traditional floppy cotton sun bonnet to a Stetson-style cowboy hat, signalling a distinct shift towards a tomboyish aesthetic. This new adaptation promises inclusivity and aims to delve deeper into Native American experiences, who were previously portrayed with thinly drawn characters. The series intends to provide these characters with their own stories, shedding light on the historical injustices faced by Indigenous peoples.

Originally based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s memoirs, the series stressed the importance of community and mutual support. In contrast to her daughter’s emphasis on self-reliance, the remake reaffirms Wilder’s vision of collective responsibility, asserting that “None of us can make it alone here; we need help from each other.”

While Little House on the Prairie was marketed as children’s programming during its initial broadcast in the UK, its themes often strayed into darker territory, tackling issues of plague, addiction, and death. The original series’ portrayal of Laura as a flawed, relatable character resonated with viewers who saw her navigate challenges and learn from her mistakes in a way that remains engaging.

The dynamics between characters have evolved, with Laura’s new best friend, Native American character Good Eagle, offering a departure from the original series’ adversarial relationship with Nellie. Critics note that while the updated casting reflects a more progressive narrative, the character depth may not reach the complexities of the original. Good Eagle’s role currently appears less compelling compared to the dynamics between old Laura and Nellie.

Notably, the depiction of Laura’s mother has also shifted. Strengthened in character, she diverges from traditional portrayals of women in frontier settings, embodying a more assertive presence in the new script. The drama retains both heartwarming and troubling elements, spotlighting themes of alcoholism and illness while also showcasing the importance of community support.

The production quality matches Netflix’s high standards, featuring stunning landscapes—shot largely in Canada—though some feel that the plotlines may lack the depth found in recent similar productions. Comparisons have been made to films like Sinners and The Testament of Ann Lee, which explore more nuanced human experiences.

Despite its moralistic narratives, the series remains beautifully crafted, with compelling performances and impressive set pieces. For audiences who appreciated the original series or have fond memories of larking about as Laura in their youth, this modern adaptation promises to capture the spirit of frontier life anew.

The new ‘Little House on the Prairie’ is streaming on Netflix.
