Aryna Sabalenka exits Wimbledon after defeat to Naomi Osaka

Aryna Sabalenka is out of Wimbledon after losing in straight sets to Naomi Osaka 6-2, 7-6 (2), reports BritPanorama.

The four-time Grand Slam champion’s defeat marks the first time she has exited a major before the quarter-final stage since the 2022 French Open. Osaka’s performance has positioned her as a serious contender for the title at the All England Club.

Sabalenka’s impressive streak of 21 consecutive tie-break victories at Grand Slam level ended dramatically, with the 28-year-old Japanese player dominating the tie-break to secure her victory.

The match showcased Osaka’s return to form, igniting memories of her last major title in 2021. She delivered a statement performance, capitalising on Sabalenka’s mistakes, which were increasingly visible, notably as frustration mounted during the match.

Osaka expressed her delight following the victory, stating, “I think it was a really fun match, I’m really grateful. For me, this court is so special, this is the first match I’ve won on this court. It means a lot. My mum’s over there and I feel like her cooking is powering me.” Despite an unfavourable history against Sabalenka prior to this match, Osaka’s confidence shone through.

In contrast, Sabalenka, ranked as the world’s number one, battled against her own frustration, which culminated in a moment of indignation when she hit a ball into the stands following her final error in the tie-break.

While this loss might appear significant for Sabalenka, she will retain her top ranking despite inconsistent form since her triumph in Indian Wells and Miami earlier in the spring. This tournament, however, could signal a turning point for Osaka, who has struggled on grass and clay in past seasons.

The encounter not only highlights the complexities of elite women’s tennis, where even established stars can falter under pressure, but also underscores how quickly narratives can shift at a major event. Osaka’s remarkable performance serves as a reminder of the game’s unpredictability and the potential for resurgence, leaving an indelible impression on the championship.
