Adviser to Andy Burnham calls for royal family to return part of their wealth

Calls for royal family reform in the UK

One of Andy Burnham’s senior advisers has advocated for a significant reduction in the size of the Royal Family, suggesting they should return a portion of their accumulated wealth. MP Miatta Fahnbulleh stated that the monarchy’s fortune “belongs to us,” highlighting the need for financial independence from taxpayers, reports BritPanorama.

Fahnbulleh emphasized that the royals should no longer rely on the taxpayer-funded Sovereign Grant, which supports their official duties. She expressed her beliefs regarding the monarchy’s structure in 2020, stating, “I think the monarchy needs to be reformed,” advocating for constitutional changes to transform the nation’s relationship with the monarchy.

She argued for a significant reduction in the number of royals, aspiring for a future where the monarchy is “financially independent.” Fahnbulleh remarked that the wealth accumulated by the royal family over centuries should be partially returned to the public, claiming it ultimately belongs to the citizens.

Her comments were made during a segment of the BBC programme “Question Time,” where she served as the chief of the New Economics Foundation at the time. Currently, she represents the Peckham constituency in South East London. Meanwhile, Burnham is anticipated to step into a pivotal role as Prime Minister shortly.

Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Alex Burghart, commented on the implications of these sentiments, suggesting that Labour’s rising prominence could threaten the future of the monarchy. He remarked, “The King of the North and his team already have their sights set on our actual King.” Both Fahnbulleh and Burnham, alongside Labour Party representatives, were approached for further comments.

As discussions regarding the monarchy’s position intensify, the dialogue reflects broader societal views on accountability and the role of the royal family within modern Britain.

The debate over the monarchy’s future underscores a growing call for reforms, as citizens increasingly scrutinize the institution’s place in contemporary society.
