Liverpool unveils memorial for Diogo Jota on anniversary of his death

Liverpool have unveiled a memorial for Diogo Jota on the first anniversary of the late forward’s death, reports BritPanorama.

A “Forever 20” sculpture has been created by renowned sculptor Emma Rodgers, featuring a flowing heart at its centre, symbolizing Jota’s goal celebration. The tribute includes significant numbers 20 and 30, worn on the brothers’ playing shirts.

Jota tragically died last year alongside his brother Andre Silva in Spain, soon after marrying his long-term partner Rute Cardoso. The memorial is located on 97 Avenue at Anfield Stadium, where fans had previously gathered to pay their respects with flowers, scarves, artwork, and cards.

The design of the sculpture incorporates engravings of Jota’s song, which has been sung during the 20th minute of every match since his passing. A PlayStation controller also sits atop the plinth, referencing Jota’s love for gaming and his iconic celebration pose.

Liverpool’s statement noted that the design reflects Jota’s dynamic style, with carved letters flowing along the elegant form of the sculpture. Further personal tributes, such as sections of scarves and shirts embedded in the wax, contribute to a poignant remembrance of the brothers.

The Portuguese national team intends to honour their late forward in an upcoming match against Croatia, amidst hopes of advancing to the last 16 in the World Cup. Roberto Martinez, head coach of the national team, referred to Jota as an honorary “plus-one” player, stating, “Diogo is our sun and our light.” He expressed that his memory continues to inspire the team, emphasizing the emotional weight of the anniversary on their upcoming game.

The memorial, defined by its intricate details and heartfelt symbolism, encapsulates not just the loss of a talented player but the enduring legacy he leaves behind. In such moments, the intersection of sport, remembrance, and community echoes deeply in the hearts of those who bear witness to both triumph and tragedy.
