Gary Neville calls for England changes ahead of Panama clash
Gary Neville has urged Thomas Tuchel to make two changes to the England lineup for Saturday’s final World Cup group game against Panama, reports BritPanorama.
The former Manchester United defender suggested selecting Morgan Rogers and Nico O’Reilly as England seeks to secure the top spot in Group L. England began their World Cup campaign with a thrilling 4-2 win over Croatia but faced a setback against Ghana, finishing their last match with a frustrating 0-0 draw.
This stalemate has ignited discussions regarding the team’s balance, particularly on the left flank where Anthony Gordon has struggled to make a significant impression in the prior matches. Many fans have called for Marcus Rashford to replace Gordon, yet Neville argues that the solution might not be as straightforward as choosing between the two players.
Neville contended that a different type of player may be necessary if Panama intends to adopt a defensive stance similar to Ghana’s. He remarked, “All the top teams have to do this,” and elaborated on the challenges faced when opponents sit deep and defend.
In this context, Neville stressed the need for England to push more bodies forward and enhance their delivery into the penalty area, reflecting on tactics that could prove effective against Panama. “Maybe putting more crosses in the box, getting more bodies in the box earlier in the game,” he noted. He also hinted that Tuchel may consider “moderate” changes for the upcoming match.
Rogers’ inclusion on the left looks promising to Neville, who believes the Aston Villa player brings a different skill set compared to Gordon or Rashford. “I think someone who can connect on that left-hand side a little bit better for us,” he stated. In his view, players like Rogers or Eberechi Eze could help navigate the challenge posed by Panama’s defence more effectively.
Neville also suggested that Nico O’Reilly should replace Djed Spence at left-back, noting, “I like Djed Spence, I’ve got a lot of time for him,” but expressing confidence in O’Reilly’s abilities as a better fit for this particular matchup.
