Iran faces travel delays ahead of crucial World Cup match against Belgium

Iran arrives in Los Angeles for crucial World Cup clash against Belgium

Iran touched down in Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon, giving them barely 24 hours to prepare for this evening’s crucial World Cup clash with Belgium at SoFi Stadium, reports BritPanorama.

The squad’s late arrival followed unsuccessful efforts by FIFA to arrange an earlier departure from their base in Tijuana. In contrast, Belgium reached Los Angeles a full day ahead of their opponents, providing them with more time to acclimatize to the venue.

Originally scheduled to depart Friday evening, Iran’s players were left waiting until just before noon on Saturday, resulting in a tense start as they hurried to prepare for the match. Head coach Amir Ghalenoei spoke of the disappointing situation at Saturday’s press conference, detailing how FIFA had contacted him about a flight planned for 6pm that ultimately did not materialise.

“FIFA phoned me and said: ‘Are you ready if we get you a flight at 6pm?’ I welcomed that but we sat and waited and waited,” Ghalenoei explained. When confirmation arrived that the flight had collapsed, the coach admitted the episode would weigh on the team’s mental preparation. “That’s going to affect us mentally, especially me as a head coach,” he noted.

The Iranian manager acknowledged the efforts of FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who he claimed had tried to assist the team. Despite this, Ghalenoei stated that no other coaches participating in the tournament had reached out to offer support. “I have not had any reaction from anyone,” he declared. “Our grievances are to do with the way [World Cup organizers] have behaved towards us.”

Echoing Ghalenoei’s sentiments, Iran’s secretary-general Hedayat Mombeini emphasised their concerns, remarking, “We are the only team that are participating in the World Cup that we are at the host cities just 24 hours and it is not fair.”

In a slight concession, officials revealed that the team would be permitted to remain in the United States for two days prior to their final group match against Egypt in Seattle.

A draw or victory against Belgium this evening would significantly boost Iran’s chances of advancing to the knockout stage, elevating the stakes as they seek to overcome the challenges posed by their travel dilemmas.

As the matchday unfolds, the complexities and pressures surrounding Iran’s preparations serve as a poignant reminder of the unpredictable nature of global football, where logistics can sway fortunes as much as skill on the pitch.
