BBC edits footage after Ismael Kone’s serious injury in World Cup match
The BBC has issued a statement following the editing of footage showing Ismael Kone’s severe injury during the World Cup, due to concerns regarding the distressing audio captured during the incident, reports BritPanorama.
During Canada’s commanding 6-0 victory over Qatar in Vancouver, Kone experienced a significant leg break after receiving a late challenge from Assim Madibo. The 24-year-old collapsed in pain, signalling to both teams the critical nature of his injury.
Initial highlights broadcast on the BBC included the moment of the injury, with surrounding microphones reportedly picking up the sound of Kone’s leg breaking. In response, the broadcaster has altered the footage, muting audio and refraining from showing any replays or close-up angles of Kone in visible distress.
A BBC spokesperson stated, “We edited the audio on iPlayer from the Canada vs Qatar World Cup game highlights programme due to the sensitivities around the injury to Ismael Kone. We took all the appropriate measures and did not broadcast any replays of the tackle or shots of the player in distress. We wish him a speedy recovery.”
Kone was stretchered off while receiving oxygen but notably managed to wave to supporters as he departed for medical treatment. Following surgery, he is expected to be sidelined for four to five months, effectively ending his World Cup campaign.
Canada manager Jesse Marsch reflected on the incident, describing how the situation had shaken the squad: “You could hear the bone snap. Your heart goes out to him. Everybody’s shaken for him.” One of Marsch’s coaching staff was also overheard expressing concern about Kone’s injury, stating, “His leg is hanging off.”
Despite this setback, Kone appeared in strong spirits when visited by teammate Moise Bombito in the hospital, sharing a selfie from the bedside. Kone’s teammate Nathan Saliba came on to replace him and marked his debut with a stunning free-kick, holding up Kone’s shirt in tribute.
The result positions Canada close to qualification for the knockout stages, while Qatar now faces a must-win situation against Bosnia and Herzegovina to keep their hopes alive. The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the precarious nature of sport, where moments of brilliance can quickly turn to tragedy, and where camaraderie often shines brightest amidst adversity.
