Controversy arises over Rafael van der Vaart’s comment during World Cup coverage
Rafael van der Vaart has faced backlash after making a comment about Japan’s players during live World Cup coverage, prompting criticism from viewers, reports BritPanorama.
The former Tottenham and Real Madrid midfielder was providing analysis for Dutch broadcaster NOS during the Netherlands’ 2-2 draw with Japan when the remark ignited controversy.
While discussing Daichi Kamada’s late equaliser, Van der Vaart attempted a joke, stating, “They do look alike, of course, maybe he thought that… That’s a joke, of course. I hardly dare say anything.” The comment was met with disapproval on social media, with many viewers expressing their displeasure during the live broadcast.
Following the incident, it remains uncertain if the broadcaster will take any action. This controversy overshadowed a match in which Japan showcased resilience, twice equalising against the Dutch, who had taken the lead on two occasions.
Van der Vaart also addressed the performance of Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk. He remarked, “I have to be honest, I was quite shocked by Van Dijk… It is proving very difficult. A bit like a Boeing 747 turning,” suggesting concerns over the defender’s movement in the match.
The Netherlands had aimed to secure a victory to kick off their World Cup campaign successfully, but Japan’s tenacity earned them a deserved draw, following Kamada’s late intervention.
Next, the Dutch will face Sweden, currently leading Group F after an impressive 5-1 win against Tunisia. Despite the disappointment of failing to secure all three points, Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman noted that there were positive moments in their performance, stating, “We need to grow during the tournament.”
As the tournament unfolds, the incident serves as a reminder of the scrutiny faced by pundits and the impact of their words, particularly in the charged atmosphere of international competitions.
