Protests disrupt World Cup opening in Mexico
Chaos erupted outside the opening game of the 2026 World Cup as protesters clashed with riot police, leading to a man suffering a heart attack near the Estadio Azteca, reports BritPanorama.
Hundreds of demonstrators, many believed to be relatives of those missing amid the country’s ongoing drug war—which has claimed an estimated 400,000 lives over the past two decades—gathered outside the stadium prior to Mexico’s match against South Africa.
Minutes before the match began, protesters attempted to breach the stadium gates, escalating tensions. The unruly crowd vandalised nearby property, including smashing a lorry, and hurled flares and stones at police. Riot officers responded with tear gas and attempted to disperse the crowd, comprising nearly 1,000 individuals divided into two groups.
According to Mexico City’s Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), about 300 police officers were deployed to manage the situation, responding to violence initiated by a smaller group of around 200 masked individuals. After the game commenced, additional riot police were stationed around the stadium to prevent further disturbances.
In an unrelated incident, a man collapsed from a heart attack while heading to the stadium. Videos showed bystanders administering CPR before he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
Prior to the World Cup opener, eight separate protests were planned throughout Mexico City, involving various groups such as public workers from education, transport, healthcare, and agriculture sectors. Clara Brugada Molina, the city’s government head, stated there was no intent to ban the protests, highlighting the coexistence of public demonstrations and World Cup festivities. “This is a city where these events can coincide,” she declared, reinforcing the right to protest alongside the excitement surrounding the tournament.
Despite the turmoil off the field, the match inside recorded a 2-0 victory for Mexico, with goals from Quinones and Jimenez.
