England’s World Cup camp hit by earthquake

England’s World Cup training camp in Florida experienced tremors from a 6.1 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Cuba. The earthquake prompted evacuations of buildings in Orlando, where the Three Lions are set to play their final friendly fixture against Costa Rica, reports BritPanorama.

Fortunately, local media reported no injuries or significant damage following the quake. The England squad likely felt the impact, with the tremors being felt hundreds of miles away. This event adds a surprising twist to the team’s preparations as they acclimatise to the Florida climate.

The earthquake, which was recorded as the second-largest on record for the region, led to increased tension among nearby residents. Yusmila Hernandez, a resident of Pinar del Río, expressed her astonishment, saying, “It felt strong. I had never felt anything like that. People ran outside, everyone scared.”

The England team has been in Florida since June 1, adapting to the challenging conditions ahead of the World Cup. They played their first friendly against New Zealand last weekend, securing a 1-0 victory thanks to a goal from Harry Kane. The squad’s next match is against Costa Rica at the Inter&Co Stadium.

After the victory over New Zealand, Kane remarked on the significance of wearing the England shirt, stating, “I wear the shirt with immense pride… leading another group of guys into another World Cup is obviously a special feeling.” He noted the importance of being in the right place to score goals, pointing to his successful performance in the friendly as a step in the right direction.

As preparations continue amidst unexpected events, the resilience of the squad will be tested both on and off the pitch. The focus remains on fitness and familiarity with the conditions, showcasing the team’s determination as they approach the tournament.

In the backdrop of this unfolding drama lies a reminder of how quickly the narrative in sports can shift — amid the excitement of international competition, nature’s unpredictability offers an ever-present challenge.
