Helen George shines in High Society at the Barbican

A spirited new production of the Cole Porter musical High Society at the Barbican Centre in London is allowing Helen George, known to millions as Nurse Trixie Franklin in Call the Midwife, to showcase her talents beyond the character that has defined her career since 2012, reports BritPanorama.

In this production, George portrays the romantically conflicted American heiress Tracy Lord, a role immortalised by Grace Kelly in the 1956 film. Critics and audiences have noted that her performance reveals a versatility that contrasts with her long-term association with her television role.

The show presents George in a refreshing light, displaying her vocal and dancing abilities, honed during her training at the Royal Academy of Music. Her character indulges in moments of revelry, capturing a side of her artistry that has been somewhat restricted in the emotional dynamics of Call the Midwife.

As years pass, the characters in Call the Midwife have evolved, often leading to limitations in how George and her colleagues express themselves. The much lighter premise of High Society, particularly scenes where Tracy Lord celebrates with champagne moments before her wedding, allows for a breath of fresh air that contrasts with the serious tones of the long-running series.

George’s proven capabilities can be traced back to her previous work on Strictly Come Dancing and her musical role in The King and I, both of which showcased her talent for singing and dancing. In High Society, her voice melds beautifully with Julian Ovenden, who plays Tracy’s ex-husband Dexter, notably during the poignant duet “True Love.”

The production also introduces Freddie Fox, who is making his musical theatre debut, and his energetic performances alongside Ovenden add a lively touch to the show.

George’s career trajectory reflects the possibilities available post-Call the Midwife, as many of its alumni have successfully transitioned into varied roles. Jessica Raine and Charlotte Ritchie, for instance, have moved into diverse dramatic territory, while Emerald Fennell, an Oscar-winner, found early footing in the same series.

For Helen George, High Society signifies a significant opportunity to redefine her public persona, and the engagement with her work continues at the Barbican until 11 July, followed by a national tour.
