West Midlands Police investigate alleged assault on coach during Birmingham Open

Investigation launched into assault at Birmingham Open

West Midlands Police has commenced an investigation following an alleged assault on a coach during the Birmingham Open. Australian player James McCabe reported that the incident transpired after a disagreement involving his father, a coach, and a club staff member at the Edgbaston Priory Club, reports BritPanorama.

McCabe detailed that his father underwent previous surgical procedures on his cervical spine, which have been exacerbated by the incident, leading to worsening symptoms including severe pain and dizziness. “We called 999 multiple times and attended Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. He has urgent care follow-up today,” McCabe stated.

He characterised the altercation as a “serious police-reported player/coach safety incident at the tournament venue,” alleging that his father was followed and physically handled by a staff member. McCabe has urged that witnesses and relevant CCTV footage be identified.

The police confirmed they received reports of the incident on June 1 but noted that “no arrests have been made, and enquiries are ongoing.” The Birmingham Open, which marks the start of the British grass-court season, features competitions from both the ATP Challenger and WTA 125 tours.

The Lawn Tennis Association, in conjunction with the ATP and Edgbaston Priory Club, has stated that they are assisting in the investigation concerning this incident. They released a joint statement indicating their commitment to transparency as the probe continues.

The Birmingham Open has sought to modernise in recent years, notably allowing male players on its grass courts for the first time in 150 years. This shift has signalled a new direction for the tournament, aiming to foster a more inclusive atmosphere for fans and players alike.

As the investigation unfolds, the incident raises questions about safety protocols and conduct within tournament venues, reminding stakeholders of the delicate balance between competitive spirit and the welfare of all involved.
