Harry Redknapp questions Cole Palmer’s World Cup omission

Harry Redknapp has questioned Thomas Tuchel’s decision to leave Cole Palmer out of England’s World Cup squad, insisting the Chelsea star possesses the type of match-winning quality that can decide major tournaments, reports BritPanorama.

With England’s opening fixture against Croatia on June 17 approaching, debates over several selection decisions made by Tuchel continue to spark discussion. Among these, Palmer’s omission particularly stands out to Redknapp, who believes that England have ample attacking talent but could benefit from Palmer’s unique ability to create decisive moments.

Speaking to Standard Sport, Redknapp expressed that he would have included the Chelsea playmaker despite his inconsistent performance last season. “I’d have Cole Palmer, all day,” he said, emphasizing that Palmer’s capacity to change the dynamics of a game could be invaluable in tight situations.

Palmer’s difficulties this season, primarily due to a recurring groin injury, have impacted his form and seemingly cost him a place in Tuchel’s plans. Nevertheless, Redknapp contends that overlooking a player of Palmer’s caliber, who possesses the potential to unlock stubborn defenses, could be detrimental for the national team in high-pressure scenarios.

Redknapp compared Palmer’s impact to that of Paolo Di Canio, a player renowned for his game-changing abilities during his time with West Ham. “You might say, ‘just go and do something special,’” Redknapp explained, advocating for the inclusion of players who can make a difference in critical moments. “That’s what people want to see. That’s what we need.”

In addition to his concerns regarding Palmer, Redknapp raised issues about England’s defensive options heading into the tournament. He lamented the lack of certainty and quality in the current squad compared to previous generations, referencing former stalwarts such as Ashley Cole and John Terry as benchmarks of defensive strength.

“We have good forward players and good midfield players, I just worry whether we’re strong enough defensively,” he remarked, hinting at the uncertainty surrounding who might form the back line. Redknapp acknowledged his own difficulty in selecting a defensive lineup, which poses a challenge for the squad as they prepare for the World Cup.

Despite these apprehensions, Redknapp holds a degree of optimism regarding England’s prospects. The national side has shown significant progress in major tournaments under Gareth Southgate, reaching the semi-finals and quarter-finals in the last two World Cups, along with consecutive appearances in the finals of the European Championships.

As the tournament draws near, it remains to be seen whether Redknapp’s insights will resonate as England embarks on their quest for World Cup glory, with selections that will inevitably be scrutinized amid the pressure of international competition.
