Crystal Palace secures historic Europa Conference League victory
Crystal Palace co-owner Steve Parish declared that “sometimes the good guys win” following the club’s maiden European trophy triumph in the Conference League, reports BritPanorama.
This significant achievement was marked by a thrilling 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano, with Jean-Philippe Mateta scoring the decisive goal. Mateta’s comeback story is noteworthy; he had faced departure from the club earlier this year due to medical clearance issues for a potential move to AC Milan, which frustrated some Palace supporters.
Parish expressed disbelief at the triumph, stating, “It’s incredible. An amazing achievement. All the ups and downs. To get to the Europa League, where we deserve to be,” in comments made to TNT Sports. He noted that when he first took over the club, the very notion of competing at this level seemed improbable.
Departing manager Oliver Glasner reflected on the victory, describing it as a fitting conclusion to his time at Selhurst Park, where he has overseen the most successful period in the club’s history. “I can’t even believe that this was the last game,” he said, characterizing his tenure as “a good chapter to read in the Crystal Palace book, but other chapters will follow.”
The win in the Conference League, combined with last season’s FA Cup and Community Shield victories, represents what Glasner termed “delayed justice” for the club. He remarked, “So sometimes, okay, you have to take a round trip, and now we are there. Crystal Palace is where they should be.”
Mateta emerged as the hero of the final, converting a rebound from Adam Wharton’s saved shot, followed by his signature corner-flag celebration. After the match, he expressed his exhilaration, stating, “I feel fantastic. We did it. Our first time in Europe, I just want to celebrate.” The physical toll of the contest did not escape him, as he added, “I am tired right now, we gave everything, that’s why we won today.”
This triumph guarantees Crystal Palace’s participation in the Europa League next season. Although originally qualifying through their FA Cup victory, they were excluded due to a legal dispute involving former investor John Textor and UEFA regarding multi-club ownership rules, which saw Nottingham Forest take their place in the tournament.
The joyous atmosphere at Selhurst Park serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of sport, where perseverance often leads to glory, even as challenges and controversies linger in the backdrop.
