Reform candidate Robert Kenyon to challenge Andy Burnham in Makerfield by-election

Plumber Robert Kenyon has been announced as the man who will go head-to-head with Andy Burnham in the all-important Makerfield by-election, reports BritPanorama.

The self-employed plumber previously stood in the constituency during the 2024 general election, where he finished second, losing out to Labour’s Josh Simons by a narrow margin of just 5,000 votes. This slender gap indicates a closely contested race ahead for the former Manchester mayor Burnham, a long-time fixture in the region.

Makerfield, which encompasses areas like Wigan, Hindley, and Ashton-in-Makerfield, has been under Labour control for several decades. The political landscape shifted recently when Simons stepped down to facilitate Burnham’s return to Westminster, prompting Nigel Farage to commit significant resources to the Reform candidate’s campaign, as he aims to turn the seat red.

Kenyon, a lifelong resident, claims he would be the first individual born in Makerfield to serve as its MP. Announcing his candidacy, Reform UK emphasized the personal connection Kenyon has with the constituency, stating, “Makerfield was Andy Burnham’s backup plan. For Robert Kenyon, it’s his home.” Kenyon, a newly elected councillor for Bryn with Ashton-in-Makerfield North, gained prominence during local elections where Reform outperformed Labour significantly.

In the local elections held last Thursday, Farage’s party secured victories in all eight wards in Makerfield, averaging 50 percent of the votes compared to Labour’s 22.7 percent. Kenyon himself received 31.8 percent of the vote in the 2024 general election while Labour claimed 45.2 percent. His profile stands out as he has worked as a plumber in the area for years, following an apprenticeship he completed at 18.

In a video shared by Reform, Kenyon articulated a clear distinction between himself and his opponents: “Labour and a lot of the other parties have got career politicians; they go to private school, they go to university, they get a job at a think tank.” He further noted, “For Andy Burnham, Makerfield will be a stepping stone, but for me, it’s the only place I’ve ever wanted to represent.”

As the by-election approaches, Burnham’s future is uncertain. Despite his popularity, local residents have become increasingly sceptical of Labour’s long-standing dominance. Constituent and former Labour voter Mark Leach remarked that although Burnham possesses many commendable qualities, “he’s got his work cut out to win here.” Other residents echoed sentiments of disengagement with the Labour Party, suggesting a shift in voter loyalty this election season.

While some support remains for Burnham, especially from constituents like teacher Graeme Brierley, Kenyon’s appeal as an authentic candidate with local ties may resonate strongly with voters looking for change. “Makerfield has never had a member of Parliament who was actually born in Makerfield,” Kenyon stated. “This will be a tough fight, but I am going to give this contest my best shot.”

As both candidates prepare for the impending contest, the outcome could significantly influence the regional political landscape and signal shifting attitudes among voters, particularly within constituencies traditionally loyal to Labour.

The unfolding events in Makerfield illustrate the shifting dynamics in British politics, highlighting the potential for new voices amidst entrenched political rivalries. While Burnham represents continuity, Kenyon embodies a challenge to the status quo, reflecting a broader desire for representation that resonates on a personal level with local constituents.
