Andy Burnham calls for ban on VAR in football

Labour leadership hopeful Andy Burnham has declared he “would ban VAR” from football, reports BritPanorama.

While campaigning as the party’s candidate in the Makerfield by-election, Burnham criticized the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, arguing it detracts from the spontaneity of the game. He expressed his concerns during an interview with ITV News, stating, “Gone. Get rid. I’ll tell you why. It’s killing spontaneity in the ground.” As a season ticket holder at Everton, he noted how the uncertainty surrounding goal celebrations takes away from the enjoyment for fans.

Burnham elaborated further, saying, “So that’s a bad thing. But number two, it doesn’t get decisions right. You could put up with it if it then got decisions right, but it doesn’t get the decisions right, and it’s not consistent.” He pointed out the inconsistency in decisions made by VAR, claiming it appears to favor certain teams while neglecting others.

The Mayor of Greater Manchester concluded his remarks with a strong rejection of the system: “It’s killing spontaneity, it’s not getting decisions right. Get rid.”

Burnham’s criticisms resonate with a broader frustration within the football community, as several figures have voiced similar sentiments about VAR. Notably, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola remarked that he has “never” fully trusted refereeing decisions during his tenure in English football. He described VAR as akin to a “flip of a coin,” emphasizing that teams need to accept the uncertainty it brings.

VAR has been implemented in the Premier League since 2019, intended to enhance the accuracy of officiating. Despite its goals, many stakeholders remain sceptical. Guardiola articulated dissatisfaction with officiating standards, referencing the two FA Cup finals his team lost, attributing part of the blame to referee errors alongside VAR’s limitations.

As discussions about VAR continue, the footballing world finds itself at a crossroads, balancing technology’s promise against its practical shortcomings, navigating the evolving relationship between technology and the game’s intrinsic spirit.

It reflects the perennial debate in sport: how technology can enhance the game without undermining the very emotions that define it. Each controversy invites scrutiny of a system designed to improve fairness but increasingly questioned by those it aims to serve.
