James Corden criticises Southampton amid spying controversy

James Corden has launched a scathing attack on Southampton amid the Championship spying controversy, insisting the club should face a “severe and heavy price” if they are found to have broken English Football League rules, reports BritPanorama.

The comments come as Middlesbrough await further clarity on their position after being eliminated from the play-offs following Southampton’s 2-1 second-leg victory at St Mary’s, secured by Shea Charles in extra time. This result means Southampton will proceed to the Championship play-off final against Hull City on May 23.

The controversy intensified following allegations that a Southampton affiliate observed Middlesbrough’s training session prior to the initial leg of their play-off clash. Southampton faces charges for potential breaches of EFL regulations, which include rules regarding good faith among clubs and observing an opponent’s training within 72 hours of a fixture.

While the club has not yet been found guilty, the case is scheduled for review by an independent disciplinary commission. Corden, a lifelong West Ham supporter, voiced strong opinions on talkSPORT, claiming that if Southampton stands to gain significant financial rewards from promotion, they should compensate Middlesbrough considerably in the event of proven wrongdoing.

“If Southampton go up and make, let’s say, £150 million from Premier League television revenue, then they should have to pay 50 percent of that to Middlesbrough,” Corden argued. “Because, if the allegations are proven, that would be cheating.” He urged clear distinctions should be made, stating, “We should stop calling it Spygate and call it what it is – cheating.”

The EFL aims to finalise the disciplinary proceedings, including any potential appeals, ahead of the play-off final later this month. In response to the uncertainty, Middlesbrough’s players have postponed the beginning of their summer break to resume training while they await the decision.

Moreover, Andy McDonald, MP for Middlesbrough and Thornaby East, responded to the situation by commending Boro’s head coach Kim Hellberg for his integrity amidst the turmoil, stating, “Southampton cannot be allowed to profit from their dishonesty. The EFL have to come down firmly and decisively, and they need to do it quickly.”

As the battle for promotion continues, the tension surrounding this issue casts a shadow over Southampton’s play-off aspirations, illustrating just how fragile the margins become in the pursuit of top-flight football.
