Celtic wins dramatic match amid controversial penalty decision

Derek McInnes branded a controversial late penalty decision “disgusting” after Celtic snatched a dramatic victory to ensure the Scottish Premiership title race will be decided on the final day, reports BritPanorama.

Hearts appeared to be closing in on a famous championship after cruising to a 3-0 win over Falkirk. With the league leaders taking care of their own business, attention turned to Celtic’s clash with Motherwell. The Glasgow giants looked set to drop crucial points after Motherwell staged a stirring comeback, only for a dramatic intervention in the 99th minute to turn the title race on its head.

Video assistant referee Andrew Dallas advised referee John Beaton to review an incident involving Sam Nicholson. Replays appeared to show the ball striking Nicholson’s head rather than his hand, but Beaton nonetheless pointed to the spot after consulting the pitchside monitor. Kelechi Iheanacho converted the resulting penalty to seal a remarkable 3-2 win for Celtic and keep the title race alive until Saturday.

McInnes was incensed by the decision and suggested Hearts were battling more than just their on-field opponents. “When you heard Celtic had a 96th-minute penalty going to VAR, you just assume they get it,” he told Sky Sports. “It’s disgusting.” He added, “We’re up against it, we’re up against everybody. I don’t think it’s a penalty. It’s so poor and it looks as though Celtic have been given it. They have been very fortunate.”

The decision has had significant consequences for the title race. Had Celtic dropped points, Hearts would have travelled to Celtic Park knowing they could afford a two-goal defeat and still be crowned Scottish champions for the first time since 1960. Instead, McInnes and his players must now avoid defeat if they are to become the first club outside Celtic and Rangers to win the Scottish top flight in 40 years.

Despite his fury, McInnes quickly shifted his focus to the opportunity awaiting his side. “It’s going to the last game. We’re delighted to be part of it,” he said. “To do it, we’re going to have to go and get a positive result. I’m looking forward to it already. There’ll be no feeling sorry for ourselves. What a game it’s going to be.”

Former footballer Gary Lineker weighed in on Celtic’s penalty, describing the call on social media as “might be the worst VAR decision I’ve seen.” Meanwhile, Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou expressed being “in total shock,” while Celtic boss Martin O’Neill maintained it was the correct decision.

The unfolding drama not only highlights the tension surrounding the title race but also underscores the contentious role of technology in modern football. As the season reaches its climax, all eyes will be on Celtic Park for what promises to be a thrilling finale.
