Luis Suarez misses out on World Cup selection

Luis Suarez looks set to miss out on one final World Cup appearance after reports in Uruguay claimed Marcelo Bielsa has left the veteran striker out of his provisional squad, reports BritPanorama.

The 39-year-old had initially retired from international football in September 2024 after scoring a record 69 goals in 143 appearances for the Uruguay national team. His absence means that he will not be available for selection as the tournament draws near.

Suarez represented his country at four World Cups and contributed significantly during one of the most successful periods in Uruguay’s modern football history. Despite his retirement, he had hinted at a willingness to return to the team if called upon, stating earlier this month that he “would never say no” to another opportunity with the national squad.

Now, according to journalist Rodri Vazquez, the Inter Miami star has not been included in Uruguay’s expanded 55-man longlist for this summer’s tournament. If confirmed, the decision would bring an end to any hopes of the 39-year-old adding to his extraordinary international career.

Just weeks after retiring, Suarez had publicly criticised Bielsa and claimed the Argentine’s management style had caused divisions within the squad. He suggested that some players contemplated leaving the team and encouraged supporters not to blame the squad if results didn’t meet expectations.

In subsequent remarks, Suarez acknowledged that some of his comments may have been excessive, stating, “I said something I shouldn’t have said. I have already apologised to those I needed to apologise to.”

Despite leaving the door open for a possible comeback, it now appears Bielsa is prepared to move forward without one of Uruguay’s greatest ever players. Currently, Suarez plays for Inter Miami alongside former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi and, while no longer at his peak, remains a competitive presence in the game.

Uruguay is set to begin their World Cup campaign against Saudi Arabia in Miami on June 15, followed by matches against Cape Verde and Spain in Group H. In the shadow of Suarez’s potential absence, the team faces a pivotal moment in their quest for glory.

As the tournament approaches, the narrative surrounding legacy and the passing of the torch remains ever-present, reminding fans how swiftly the chapters of football history can turn.
